Which game genres actually belong on a phone

October 1, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

Not every genre survives the jump to mobile. Turn-based strategy and RPGs often feel right at home because they pause naturally and suit the stop-start rhythm of playing in short bursts.

Casual and puzzle games are the obvious fit, but I'd argue management sims belong here too. They thrive on the dip-in, dip-out style that a phone encourages, and they don't demand split-second input.

The tricky ones are twitch-heavy action and precision racing. They can be brilliant, but only when the developer really commits to the control scheme. When they get it wrong, you feel every missing button.

My rule of thumb: if a genre needs you to react faster than your thumbs can comfortably move across glass, it has to work extra hard to earn its place on a phone.
